Times of crisis may bring out the best in you, but they are a magnet for scammers, and sadly right now is no different.

Fraudsters follow the headlines and have already been working overtime to create ways to encourage people to part with their cash and personal information. We saw this with the Australian bushfires in January 2020, throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and with the war in Ukraine.

If you are looking to help people in Turkey and Syria, please donate wisely – do your research first so you give without getting scammed.

Please protect yourself with the following information:

Scammers will pretend to be legitimate well-known charities, creating their own charity names, and impersonating people impacted by the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

Scammers will be cold-calling, direct messaging and creating fake websites and pages on social media to raise funds. Avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments in unsolicited emails, texts or social media messages. They may attempt to lure you into unwittingly downloading malware onto your device or take you to a fake website to steal your money and personal information.

Do not donate via fundraising pages on platforms that do not verify the legitimacy of the fundraiser or that do not guarantee your money will be returned if the page is determined to be fraudulent.

Be careful about crowdfunding requests as these may be fake and also come from scammers. Check the terms and conditions of funding platforms and ensure you are dealing with official organisations. If you are unsure, make your donation to an established charity instead.

If you think you have paid money to a scammer, please contact your bank immediately.

Watch out for these fake McAfee emails. Action Fraud received over 2,000 reports about them.

Your reports have led to the removal of 200,000 scam URLs as of December 2022.

Egg labelling changes have been introduced for poultry that have had to be housed due to avian influenza.

Eggs originating from free range flocks in Norfolk, Suffolk and parts of Essex will need to be labelled as barn eggs. This will apply to the rest of England from the 27th February. This in line with Egg Marketing Standards Regulations. The commencement date (1st February) marks the end of the 16-week grace period given after the introduction of a regional (12 October 2022) and subsequent national mandatory housing order (7 November 2022).

In recognition of current elevated input costs facing the industry along with the impacts of AI, Defra will allow the same packaging concessions that were granted last year. This means where other options are not feasible, such as over-stickering or marketing eggs in “barn reared” egg boxes, industry will be allowed the use of direct print to pack or an affixed label on free-range boxes to communicate to consumers that the eggs have come from hens that are now barn reared.

Over the last two years, the United Kingdom has faced its largest ever outbreak of avian influenza with over 300 cases confirmed since late October 2021 of which over 270 have been in England.

The enhanced biosecurity measures including housing mandated by the Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) currently in force in England have been vital in protecting flocks across the country from avian influenza.

Housing combined with stringent biosecurity measures provide greater risk reduction and together these measures have been key in driving the avian influenza case rate down in the face of unprecedented wild bird infections.

The labelling will remain in place until the housing order is lifted.

With the cost of living soaring and winter on its way, WaterSafe, the UK’s register of approved contractors working with drinking water, has released a new film urging people to always use a qualified plumber.

Poundland are recalling their Play & Learn Xylophone due to a choking hazard.

The product has been recalled as it has insufficient glue holding the balls on the end of the mallets in place. If these balls were to detach, they would become small parts that could be placed in a child’s mouth causing them to choke.

If you have bought the above product, do not use it. Instead return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund. No receipt is required.
