March 2022

Now that Spring is on its way, the first snowdrops and primroses were spotted in the churchyard in January and aconites in village gardens. Although the bare root planting season is almost over for hedge and multiple planting there is a good selection of  container grown specimens available for individual planting.

Small grants are still available from the Parish Council for Worlingworth residents should you wish to add a tree to your garden (every little helps the local wildlife and to lower CO2 emissions)

Please contact the Tree Warden Francis Muldoon tel.01728 627166 or email j50fjm@gmail.com

During the previous year Worlingworth has lost several of its mature trees and some hedgerows.

Three trees became the victims of the recent “storm Eunice” including one of the old oaks in Willow Yard. More mature trees and hedgerows have been removed because of development and building.

Currently Worlingworth has approximately 14 Tree Preservation Orders in place, either on individual trees or groups of trees, which means these trees are recognised as being important to the community.

These orders offer a measure of protection to the tree. For example any work to be carried out on the tree has to have written permission from the Local Authority. There are sanctions for landowners who damage or fell trees without permission and they have a legal obligation to replace the tree.

While we cannot protect trees from events such as “Eunice” attempts can be made to prevent the felling of more trees by identifying which trees might fulfil fill the criteria for a TPO:-

The local authority needs to assess the particular importance of an individual tree or group of trees for characteristics including:
⁃ Size and form
⁃ Future potential as an amenity
⁃ Rarity, cultural or historic value
⁃ Contribution to, and relationship with the landscape
⁃ Contribution to the character or appearance of a conservation area

Anyone can apply for a TPO, so if you are aware of mature trees which may meet the above criteria and may benefit from the protection of such an order please inform the tree warden, Francis Muldoon, tel 01728 627166, so further investigation can be made.

October 2021

With the cooler weather approaching the time for planting bare root trees and hedges has arrived. As gardens are being prepared for the winter months it is worth considering if there is space for tree(s) or hedging. Small grants are available from Worlingworth Parish Council for planting within the parish.
For further details please contact Francis Muldoon, tree warden, tel 01728627166 email j50fjm@gmail.com

June 2021

We are delighted to report that a parishioner has kindly donated several saplings for planting in the Parish.  These saplings include horse chestnut, field maple and cherry, and they have been distributed to Parishioners who have previously expressed a wish to plant trees.
