June

Worlingworth & Tannington WI are 100 years old this year!
Who would have thought that 100 years ago when the WI met at a little room in Tannington with an open fire to keep warm  that we would still be going today?
Much has changed over the years but the spirit of the members has remained the same. Still keen to be involved in their community, still welcoming faces, still interested in learning new skills and passing on old ones and of course still campaigning!
Looking back at previous campaigns the WI was ahead of the curve with equal pay for women, better maternity care, first to talk about HIV/AIDS, women on jury service and of course leaders in the Keep Britain Tidy campaign.

The very first campaign in 1918 was calling for “sufficient supply of convenient and sanitary houses, being of vital importance to women in the country”. Have times changed?

We are glad to say that several of our members have been with us for 65+ years and that must be a testament to the embracing spirit of the WI as an organisation.

We also attract new members with our youngest being 23 so there’s room for everyone at Worlingworth & Tannington WI!

Due to the Covid restrictions, we in common with the rest of the country, have put our celebrations on hold but we hope to have a get together towards the end of the year at the Community Centre.

Diana Totten President 2021.

February 2021

Worlingworth & Tannington have been keeping in touch with members despite the lockdown.

Over Christmas the Committee organised for each member a ‘meeting in a bag’. This included a Christmas themed quiz by our secretary, a hat, couple of nice chocs, fruit tea bags, membership booklet of offers, SEFWI News and  2 easy biscuit recipes.

We also had a Zoom meet up with a glass of something a mince pie and our hats on. Just for half an hour we were able to forget Covid and catch up with familiar faces.

The President  asked members in January to write a few words on what the last year has meant to them. Whether the lockdown has been a catalyst for change, how they have felt over the course of the year, has life changed for them or not too much? Have friends been important? How was working during this time? This will be compiled into a record of a year, that is hopefully a once in a lifetime event.

February meeting saw those of us who use Zoom meet up for a talk on Dunedin down in the south of the South Island of New Zealand. Pic below of 2 handsome beasts to cheer up the winter evenings. Just out of interest ...the rolling waves are as a result of no land mass between the Antarctic and NZ.

A transcript will be available of the talk for those members who don’t use Zoom.

The March meeting will again be on Zoom and the subject is Colour Me Beautiful by Helen Garth who will show us all how to choose colours to suit our complexions.

If anyone would like to know more about the WI please use the contact details below.

We meet on the 1st Wednesday of every month at 7.15pm.

Finally, one of our members shared the outcome of the biscuit recipe with me and the result is below.

Recipes available if you would like them. Really easy, no special ingredients!

December 2020

The committee of Worlingworth & Tannington WI would like to wish all their members and all villagers a very happy, safe and peaceful Christmas. The committee will be sending our members a ‘meeting in a bag’ in December in place of a face to face meeting. This will contain a few small treats for the festive season. When the time is right we are ready to go with a flexible programme for 2021 and will look forward to welcoming back all our members. Happy Christmas! For details about Worlingworth & Tannington WI please contact either Jenny Wilkinson 628798 or Diana Totten 628077

Update May

Sadly no meeting again this month but we will look forward to meeting up when it is safe to do so and await best advice.

Perhaps when this is over we will have the tidiest gardens/drawers/cupboard/photo albums/sock drawers! Still haven’t got round to mine but there’s always next week...

In the meantime here’s a recipe for fruit & almond slices that always go down well and are pretty simple to make.

You will need a 12”x4” tin or equivalent.

For the base - 3oz plain flour, 1oz caster sugar 2oz butter/marg, 1oz currants, 12 glacé cherries halved.

Mix flour, sugar, butter until it forms a ball. Roll lightly and then press into the base of tin.

Spread currants & cherries over base.

For the topping - 2oz butter, 2oz caster sugar, 1 large egg, 2oz ground almonds, almond essence, icing sugar.

In a bowl cream together the butter & sugar until fluffy. Add egg gradually.

Stir in ground almonds and essence. Spread over fruit layer.

Bake at 180 until golden brown.

Dredge with icing sugar and cut into slices when cold.

For the metric amongst you - 1oz = 25g

Top tip for all bakers who want to make a simple sponge cake - WEIGH THE EGGS AND EVERYTHING ELSE* IS THE SAME. Whisk until light in colour. Bake 180.

*marg, sugar & self raising flour.

In normal times we meet on the first Wednesday of the month at the Community

Centre at 7.15.

All very welcome.

Please contact either Diana 628077 or Jenny 628798 for more information.

Notes from the WI here and away
Aspirations
Keep us, O God from pettiness, let us be large in thought, word and deed.
Let us be done with fault- finding and leave off self seeking.
May we put away pretence and meet each other face to face without self pity and without prejudice.
May we never be hasty in judgment and always generous.
Let us take time for all things good, make us to grow calm, serene, gentle.
Teach us to put into action our better impulses straightforward and unafraid.
Grant us that we may realise it is the little things that create differences, that in the big things of life we are one.
And May we strive to touch and know the great women’s heart common to us all and,
O Lord God, let us not forget to be kind.

The Best Chocolate Cake Ever
8oz butter, 2 cups sugar , 4 tsp baking powder,
8 dessert spoons golden syrup , 4 cups plain flour,
3 cups milk , 4 eggs , 4 tbsp cocoa, 4 tsp soda (bicarbonate to you and me)
Melt butter & golden syrup. Beat eggs & sugar and add to butter mix. Add flour & dry ingre-dients. Melt soda in milk and add.
This makes 2 x 8” cakes or 1 x 10”. Cook in oven 150 degrees for one and half hours or until knife comes out clean. This is a fluffy cake which stays fresh and freezes well.

Keep safe and look forward to seeing you all when we can on the first Wednesday of each month, 7.15pm at Worlingworth Community Centre.
