Home-Start Summer Play Sessions - sea, sand and snakes!!!
It was a busy summer for the Worlingworth Home-Start family group . After talking to parents who came along to our group (Monday mornings at the Community Centre) there was a lot of enthusiasm for summer holiday sessions . We are very grateful to the Adnams charity who gave us the funding for six sessions to run in addition to our weekly group. The idea for these summer holiday sessions was that they were for any local families from Worlingworth or surrounding villages with children aged 0-11 years old and we also wel-comed older brothers and sisters to join in the fun.
Living in a rurally isolated area can make the six weeks of the summer holiday difficult to fill and we were looking to offer free, fun sessions for adults and children to enjoy together. Our extra sessions included a coach trip to Southwold for the day. The children enjoyed a dip in the sea, making sandcastles, a ride on the carousel even fish and chips on the pier! We also had a food and crafts from around the world day. The children made pizza for lunch, sugar skulls from Mexico and dream catchers from North America.
We had a morning visit to Stradbroke library when Maureen opened up the library for our group, we had singing, stories and snacks and found out about the summer holiday reading challenge. Families could sign up to take part. We then went over to the playing field for sports and a picnic. We had a fabulous morning with Jurassic Encounters (a mobile zoo) the children and adults were captivated by the baby meerkats, the scorpion that glowed under UV light, the friendly tortoise and the cuddly skunk. The bravest enjoyed handling the snake! After meeting the animals we had animal crafts and the children put on a puppet show as well as enjoying a picnic on the playing field. A big thank you to Chris who joined us one morning for a music lesson - the children enjoyed marching around the room and playing the instru-ments on the music tree!
Another day we held a cookery session where we made sweet-corn fritters, homemade sausage rolls and our own yogurt granola desserts! We were delighted with the number of families who came along to one or more of these sessions. We would hope to be able to do something similar next summer as the feedback from those who came was very positive.
We want to extend an invitation to any families who would like to join us on a Monday morning 10-12. We are a friendly group, the session is free and open to all (Mums, Dads, Grandparents, Child minders). Our mornings include a range of different play activities (indoor and outdoor), songs and games as well as time for a chat over a cuppa and snack time for both children and adults. The term time mornings are aimed at children aged 0-5 years. Our current sessions are on the theme Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes!
